There She Is…Almost
Times change. Death and taxes still only two things you can count on.
Miss America, once upon a time, always was crowned the weekend after Labor Day in Atlantic City. Years ago, it was a way to extend vacationing along the boardwalk. Bert Parks singing, high heels with one-piece swim suits–tradition! But in our new millennium, we crown Miss America in January in Vegas with the help of–what else?–reality TV. Throw 52 young women together, and we get to play pageant judge.
So our cute, smart, wonderful Miss Texas, Rebecca Robinson, will be showcased tonight on the first installment of the TV show, “Miss America, Countdown to the Crown,” at 9 p.m. on TLC. Evidently we get to vote on who we like.
I’ve had the pleasure of spending some time with our tap-dancing Miss T, and I can tell you she is a winner. Her TLC bio claims that she’s “bilingual,” but that misses her languages by two. Rebecca speaks FOUR! That blows that dumb-blonde stereotype all to pieces, doesn’t it?
Just as the Miss A TV show takes off, we’re on a roll for the local pageants. Heather Edwards Bruce, herself once a runner-up to Miss Texas, tells me the Miss Southlake and Miss Teen Southlake Pageant is set for 7 p.m. Saturday (Jan. 3) at Carroll Senior High School in Southlake. Admission is $15.

Joy…You have mentioned two of my favorite people…Rebecca Robinson and Heather Edwards Bruce. I have attended the Miss Texas Pageant for the past 20 years, was a local Pageant director throughout the 1990’s, served as the President of the Miss Texas Local Franchise Holder Association, and was the script writer for the Miss Texas telecast for several years. I was never happier leaving Fort Worth on the Sunday following the Miss Texas Pageant than I was on July 6, 2008 because of Rebecca’s win. She also held the title of Miss Teen Texas 2000. I have known Rebecca since she was 14 years old and is one of the most down-to-earth young women I have ever known. I know she has been an excellent Miss Texas and I expect her to do very well in Las Vegas (my current home town) later this month. I am also very supportive of Heather Bruce and her continued involvement with the Miss America program. I make a small donation each year to the Miss Southlake Scholarship Program because I appreciate what Heather and her Miss Southlake Team does. That team is definitely in the program for the right reasons.

Joy,
Thank you for your continued interest and loyalty to the Miss Texas program and the young women who make it what it is. Rebecca is such a beautiful, deserving contestant of the Miss America crown! She exemplifies what “Miss Texas” is and should be. You go, Rebecca! The Miss America title is yours!!!!

Joy,
I had the pleasure of serving as local director for Rebecca when she represented Fort Worth in the Miss Texas Pageant. Rebecca is as real as anyone can be-down-to-earth, funny, intelligent, articulate and caring as well. I will be crossing my fingers on January 24 in hopes of Rebecca winning the Miss America crown. She is an awesome and amazing ambassador of our state!
