It’s March 2–Do You Know Where Your Pin Is?

by Joy Donovan on February 26, 2009

Wait, ladies, before you walk out the door today!

One last accessory…that is if you are a member of one of the 26 National Panhellenic Conference sororities. Today, March 2, is International Badge Day. That means wear your sorority pin. In public.

Don’t worry about looking like a total dork. Last year on badge day, I wore mine to work just to see what kind of reaction I got. Now I do have mine attached to a chain and wear it as a pendant, but no one even asked what it was.

And in case you want to celebrate in a huge way, check out The Web site has a list of things to do today such as take sorority friends to lunch or join a Facebook group.

You can channel your inner Elle Woods.

Spring for Some Daffodils By Friday

by Joy Donovan on

This warmer weather is making me think of spring. Spring makes me think of flowers.

Love daffodils. Maybe because they’re some of the first flowers to bloom in the spring or maybe it’s the color. Maybe both.

I do want you to know about Daffodil Days. One of the American Cancer Society’s oldest fundraising efforts, Daffodil Days supports cancer services, programs, research and education. (

Sherry Purdom, who you can contact by calling her at 817-570-0633 or emailing her at, serves as the local coordinator of this happy project. Suggested donations start at $10 for an individual bouquet and range up to a corporate case of 500 flowers for $500.

Hurry, though, while the weather is warm and you’re thinking about spring. Orders are due Friday, and they will be delivered the week of March 9.

Misery Loves Company

by Joy Donovan on

Dear Liz,

I heard the news, and I know exactly how you must feel. After 33 years as a newspaper columnist for The New York Post, you’ve been let go and it’s just not any fun at all.

It hurts your feelings, and you’re puzzled because you know you had a following. I can tell you not to take it personally, Ms. Smith, because newspapers are struggling. Like a drowning person, newspaper management is thrashing around looking for a lifeline while taking others down, too. It’s just a crying shame. We’re all sad about the state of newspapers.

Come back to Texas, Liz. Paschal High School would welcome back one of its favorite daughters. We’ll have a margarita, and let’s gossip a little. We’ll help you re-invent yourself.

Can’t wait to hear what your new book is about.
