Shining Stars snags Broadcasting/Cable Hall of Famer for this year’s Master of Ceremony!

by Larre Green on

When 2009 Shining Stars Chair, Sharon Mayes, was looking for this year’s event Master of Ceremony, she simply looked to her family for little help.   Just by lifting the phone, Ms. Mayes was able to reach out and recruit one of the most respected broadcast journalists around, Bob Schieffer, Moderator of CBS Face the Nation and the CBS Chief Washington Correspondent.  Of course, it did help that Mr. Schieffer is also Ms. Mayes brother!

For the past 30 plus years, Mr. Schieffer has covered Washington for CBS News.  During which time he has covered all four major beats, the White House, The Pentagon, The State Department and Capitol Hill, a feat that only a select few journalist including both broadcast and print, can boast about.

Mr. Shieffer’s top honors include: seven Emmy Awards, the 2002 National Press Foundation Broadcaster of the Year, 2003 Paul White Award, presented by the Radio-Television News Directors Association which recognizes and individual’s lifetime contribution to electron journalism (past recipients’ were Edward R. Murrow, Walter Cronkite, Morley Safer, Mike Wallace and Dan Rather, just to name a few), the 2004 International Radio and Television Society Foundation Award and being named a “Living Legend” by the Library of Congress in 2008.  Probably one of the greatest tributes to Mr. Shieffer’s journalistic accomplishments took place in 2005, when Texas Christian University, his alma mater, created the Schieffer School of Journalism in his honor.

Slated for October 23rd, Shining Stars celebrates amazing individuals who have made a major impact on the Tarrant County community over the past year.  Over twenty four organizations each chose one exceptional person whose dedication, hard work and accomplishments, at that organization, stood out over the last year.  These “Stars” are then honored at a luncheon held at the Dallas Marriott Las Colinas.

Bob Schieffer isn’t Ms. Mayes only famous brother. Her other brother is looking to make an address change in the fall…possibly to Austin.  Why?  Because Ms. Mayes other brother is none other than Tom Schieffer, who will be taking Texas by storm as he makes a run at becoming the next Governor of Texas, (or at least…there has been a lot of chatter about his upcoming announcement).  Stay tuned!!!

360West’s Compass Points Up

by Joy Donovan on

The beautiful people turned out for 360West’s launch party last week at Grace in Fort Worth.

The slick new mag was previewed at a cocktail party at the new downtown restaurant where everyone and everything just oozed cool. The new magazine is masterminded by Jerry Scott and Meda Kessler, the brains and talent behind the Star-Telegram’s “Indulge” publication. Publisher Jerry was kicked to the curb (hey, is he in good company or what?) and editorial director Meda opted out of the newspaper roller coaster, so the two have teamed to create a magazine covering–as its cover says–fashion, culture, home, food, travel and people.

People at this soiree were worthy of coverage. Well dressed, well heeled, well connected and well read. The party was crawling with media types that night including Mark Lowry, another Star-Telegram alum you can check out now at, and power hitters such as hiz honor, Fort Worth Mayor Mike Moncrief.

Grace owner Adam Jones, the former manager of Del Frisco’s, was overseeing the party as hors d’oeuvres were passed. Loved the “surf and turf” appetizer–a shrimp-and-steak-cube combo on a skewer. And the cosmos weren’t bad, either.

Check out the new magazine…clever features on bald guys’ shaving tips and a collection of shopping finds…you’ll like it as much as I liked the party.

REVIEW: Theatrical Performance Transports Audience

by Joy Donovan on

Concert Pianist Danny Wright

Concert Pianist Danny Wright

Life is supposed to be more than dashing to appointments, being stuck in traffic, worrying about 401Ks.

Pianist Danny Wright reminded us of how life should be In a Friday evening concert at the beautiful Majestic Theatre in Dallas. Wright gave us an oasis from fretful pressures, treating his audience to an other-worldy performance. With theatrical flair, the classically-trained Wright demonstrated his versatility choosing a varied program for this concert, which served as a fundraiser for Star Children’s Charity and The eWomen’s Network Foundation.

From inspirational to romantic, from nostalgic to dramatic, Wright transported his listeners on his musical journey connected by his own patter about his selections. In his lush interepretations of Moon River  and Summertime, Wright dramatically commanded the most from his piano.

High points from the evening came in the second half when he was joined on stage by six string musicians from the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra. Backed by the strings, his performance of Pachebel’s Canon in D and Amazing Grace were highlights. Wright and cellist Debbie Brooks paired for a duet of Don’t Cry for me Argentina, which was marred only slightly because of early difficulties with the sound level of the cello.

Also taking the stage with the pianist was soprano Lauren Jelencovich. Teaming on the ever-popular Somewhere Over the Rainbow , they ended the concert with the audience floating on an emotional, if not rainbow, high.

Top 1 Reason Dave Would Get Married?

by Joy Donovan on March 26, 2009

Go ahead. Call me old-fashioned. You won’t be the first, and you most likely won’t be the last.

Traditional about lots of normal stuff…I only wear white shoes after Easter. I write thank-you notes by hand, not email, and it’s eating away at me that I owe two people notes at this very moment. I believe the young man should meet the parents before he takes my daughter on a date. I wear dresses to skirts to church, and my husband wears a suit and tie. Things like that.

So some things in 2009 just baffle me.

Take for instance TV comedian David Letterman. He announced on his show this week that he and his girlfriend (womanfriend? partner? baby mama?) got married. He and Regina Lasko, his girfriend of 23 years (!) and the mother of his 5-year-old son, became Mr. and Mrs.  last Thursday in Montana.

Congrats and best wishes.

But why now? Couldn’t be that we were waiting for one of them to get a good job and build a substantial financial nest egg since Letterman’s been a network fixture for decades. Couldn’t be the impending birth of a child since that happened more than five years ago. Couldn’t be the thought of a personal medical crisis, since the comedian went through a very public heart bypass operation before the child was born. Couldn’t be that the bride was planning a lavish ceremony since they road by truck to the courthouse.

It’s their business, and Dave certainly owes me no explanation. I just am curious as to this modern thinking and am trying to understand. Who can reveal this mystery to me? I don’t even need a Top 10 list. One good reason will help.
