What I learned on my Spring Break!

by Larre Green on

Before anyone say’s it, I do put it down on my calendar every year, but somehow Spring Break always catches me off guard.  I guess because after “Spring Break” stopped truly affecting me (face it, after you are out of school, spring break isn’t usually covered by the company vacation plan), I never really gave it a second thought.  Honestly, other than hearing about it on the news, if you don’t have kids in school or are not in school, it doesn’t really change anything (other than wondering why the Shopping Malls are all of a sudden so busy on a weekday).  However once I had a child in school, it seems as if this random week off always creeps up and surprises me.  Now don’t get me wrong, I loved spending time with my daughter and fully realize that in the blink of an eye, she will be turning 30 and beginning to date!  That being said, I really do savor every moment we spend together but I have decided that “time spent together” doesn’t translate to “I’m home and you are now my official Spring Break Event Coordinator and Social Secretary!  Sadly, having only one child, each year is a new year of learning for me….soooooo  for you all, this is my report on What I Learned On My Spring Break!

  • 1) Just because the marker or paint says “Washable” doesn’t mean that you should color carpet and walls without care.
  • 2) Children can play at the McDonald play area for hours on end and really don’t care if you are stuck bored out of your ever-loving mind.
  • 3) Having friends over does not necessarily mean that the parent is going to get more work done, actually, you will spend more time playing referee, game coordinator and Barbie dresser…so forget trying to get work done.
  • 4) Housekeepers will be happy to keep an eye on your children while you are doing something else, but don’t expect them to do both…it is either get your house cleaned or watch your child….but not both!
  • 5) Although soap can be slippery when wet, that doesn’t necessarily mean it will always slide down the pipes when placed in the commode then flushed.
  • 6) No matter how wonderful your child’s snacks look, they are not meant for adults…if you eat them, you will see them on your backside for a very long time!
  • 7) Speaking of food, the phrase “I’m hungry” isn’t meant as just a statement as to how a child is feeling. Actually, it translates to “I’m planning on sitting here watching my show while you get your adults self in the kitchen and fix me something to eat.” Of course, followed by “Please” and a smile.
  • 8) Forget talking on the phone to anyone…important or not! No matter who is on the phone, that is always when the video ends, drink spills or cat throws up and your immediate attention is required.
  • 9) Just because you see your child covered in Band-Aids doesn’t mean it is time to panic, actually it probably just means that they have discovered the new box of “Hello Kitty” Band-Aids recently purchased at the local drugstore. And the fact that you are now out of the recently purchased Band-Aids at the local drugstore.

And the #10…and in my opinion, most important thing I learned during Spring Break is…no matter what crazy, nutty, dirty, messy, hair loosing, awful thing that happens, each second with my daughter is a treasured moment that is but a memory a second later.

Business Updates Out and About

by Joy Donovan on

Out and about in Northeast Tarrant County (insider joke for some of you)…

New places to go and see and do….

Main Street Chop & Fish House–familiar address at 62 Main in The Village of Colleyville since it’s the former home of another upscale restaurant. Tommy Dreiling opened this one opened roughly a month ago and serves, obviously, steaks and seafood.

And at that same address, but on the street level, you’ll find Main Street Taco Bar, also a Dreiling-owned establishment.
Cars are lining the parking lot of Cowboys Barbeque & Rib Co. at 5220 Highway 121. Once the spot for Railhead Smokehouse, this one is owned by Mark Gabrick.

And in yet another version of musical chairs, restaurant style, The Original Joe’s Pasta N Pizza has occupied the former Portobello location at 3809 Colleyville Blvd. Owners are Emma and lee Herdman.

Then the owners of Bellisimo bought the former Applebee’s building to open another restaurant.

Meanwhile, shoppers should know Animal Crackers boutique recently moved from Southlake to 6100 Colleyville Blvd., and yoga lovers should know Powerhouse Yoga Studio will open soon at 6000 Colleyville Blvd.
