Truly a “Triple Crown” Event!

by Larre Green on May 28, 2009

It was defiantly a “You Go, Girl” day during the Triple Crown Affair at Lone Star Park benefiting the Girl Scouts of Texas, Oklahoma Plains, Inc., held Saturday, May 16th. On one hand, this stellar event benefited an outstanding organization molding our young girls for tomorrow and on the other, for the first time in eight five years a filly named Rachel Alexandra won the second leg of the Triple Crown! This couldn’t have been better if it were planned.
Event committee volunteers Leah Rennhack, Patty Williams, Jan Grondahl, Michelle Sager, Peggy Firestone, Jacqueline, Siegel and Janet Smith lead by committee chair Lizann Cundall all ran for the roses and deserve triple crowns for this “winner” off a fundraiser.
This event also included some amazing live auction items such as tickets to the 2009 Emmy’s, an opportunity to cook with renowned Chef Ty Thoren of the Gaylord Texan Resort, a painting titled “Del Mar Thoroughbred Club” by acclaimed artist Trish Bittle, trips to West Point Academy, the Grand Cayman’s, Las Vegas, along with sparkling jewelry and an amazing South African Photo Safari…just to name a few. During the event, guests were treated to delicious offerings and a truly happing band that helped them celebrate the night away!
All this excitement was kept in perfect running order by the events celebrity emcee Rebecca Miller and auctioneer Scott Murray, who made sure that every dollar not bet on a horse made its way to the Girl Scouts.
And speaking of the horses, they, too, captured the attention of the crowd. Just as one race would end, you could immediately see everyone studying their racing forms as if they were preparing for a pop quiz. Then cheers and applause could be heard from those who had picked the right horse to win. As soon as that applause died down, the crowed began cheering again, watching the next race as if their only child was making a run for the winning score at the season’s final game. The excitement was simply amazing!
Who made it to the “Winners Circle?” Forget the horses; it was the Girl Scouts of Texas, Oklahoma Plains, Inc. that left with the horseshoe of roses around their neck!

This was the best event yet! Having the event on the Preakness Race Day was even more exciting than the Derby! As usual, the food was wonderful and the crowd cheered when the filly, Rachel Alexandra won! Must have a Girl Scout in the background somewhere among her owners. Lots of excitement during the live auction – there were some very different “experience” type items.

It was a great event! I was the fortunate high bidder of the Emmy Trip, and am looking forward to sharing the red carpet with the stars in September (guess I better start that diet now!). The take-away gifts (hand-blown glass friendship balls) were an unexpected treat — I love mine.

A great mare winning the Preakness, super food, surpurb auction items all made for a wonderful event in support of a worthy cause – Girl Scouts.

  4. Patty Williams

This was an affair to remember! What fun it was to watch the horses run and then watch the Preakness, live, as Rachel Alexandra won. The weather seemed daunting, but it seemed to make the event more intimate as guests stayed inside and socialized with each other while bidding on live and silent auction items. I didn’t get a chance to dance to the awesome sounds of the band, but maybe next year…

This was an absolutely great event! The auction items (silent and live) were spectacular; the food was fantastic; the live band was very entertaining; and the staff were all very nice and helpful. I would highly recommend this event to everyone that can possibly attend. And to top it off it was for a great cause, Girl Scouts of Texas Oklahoma Plains, Inc.
