North Texas film maker Russ Pond

Kids driving you to an early happy hour? Is the 401K still just a 201K? Did the bachelorette pick the wrong guy?

Needing a break from summer reality?

Here’s a way that’s easier than going through airport security. On Aug. 11 the DVD of the sci-fi thriller Fissure will be available for your summer escape. Check out from reality, and check Russ Pond’s movie. The Euless movie maker has produced short subjects before with his indie film company, Top Pup Media, but this is his first feature-length film.

One of the co-stars, Crystal Mantecon, recently wrapped the movie “Tree of Life” which co-stars a couple of guys you might have heard of–Brad Pitt and Sean Penn. Others in the cast are award-winning James MacDonald, Jim Blumetti, Scarlett McAlister,  Todd Haberkorn, Jane Willingham, Todd Terry and Noah Podell.

Pond premiered Fissure in 2008 at the AFI Dallas International Film Festival. You can get a preview with Webisodes and extra clips at www.Fissure.tv. Or you can follow Fissure on Twitter.

But hey, while you’re doing that, sign up to follow me on Twitter, too.

Pink the Color of the Night

by Joy Donovan on July 24, 2009

No one had to be told officially that pink was the color of the evening.

You just know  when you’re going to a Legally Blonde cast party that pink, Elle Woods’ signature color, is the color to wear. The party, following opening night for Legally Blonde at the Music Hall at Fair Park, was held for cast, patrons and special guests at Thompson & Knight LLP offices at One Arts Plaza.

So there was the predictable assortment of pink ties, pink blouses and pink scarves, but no one could have prepared for what Paul Corley, Jr. strolled in wearing.

Pink suit, pink tie and hot pink patent-leather shoes. He was either supporting Legally Blonde or Pepto-Bismol, and he certainly was the hit of the party.

The star of the musical hit, petite Becky Gulsvig, arrived, however, wearing a skinny teal tank top, a simple skirt and flip-flops. You’d wear flats, too, if you’d just spent three hours on stage belting it out in heels.

Pink flowers accented the pink-swathed tables where cool “pink thing” cocktails were shaken, not stirred, and a tasty Asian buffet featured pink take-out boxes filled with Chinese food. Jim Lee’s Starlight Room gets the credit for the food.

Dallas Summer Musicals (www.dallassummermusicals.org) claims responsibility as a producer of Legally Blonde the Musical, so the show’s success was greeted with broad smiles from the likes of Michael A. Jenkins, DSM’s president and managing director.

You might say he seemed tickled pink.

Dabal Earns GOLD!

by Larre Green on

A big round of applause goes out to Southlake’s own Kim Dabal for completing the requirements necessary to achieve the Girl Scouts of America’s highest honor – the Gold Award.

To accomplish this goal, Kim had to work hard to complete a service project in her community and let me tell you, the Girl Scouts (www.girlscouts.org) are very specific on their requirements.

“It is something that a girl can be passionate about-in thought, deed, and action. The project is something that fulfills a need within a girl’s community (whether local or global), creates change, and hopefully, is something that becomes ongoing. If it is an event, the event should be something that people will want to continue for the next year; if it is a service, it should be something that creates change or action with long-term possibilities, empowering others besides just the girl; if it is something tangible, it should come with a plan for use and maintenance within the community. The project is more than a good service project-it encompasses organizational, leadership, and networking skills. If a group of girls work on the project together, each girl must be responsible for a specific part of the project and must evaluate her participation as an individual and a member of the group.”

Kim’s project met and exceeded every requirement. She chose to redesign and a playroom for children at the Battered Women’s Foundation.  This amazing facility in Richland Hills, ran by Brenda Jackson, provides assistance to women and their families as they escape the cycle of domestic abuse.

Kim worked for over eight weeks and put in over 75 hours to create this special haven for the children.  With materials, books, paint, furniture, a TV and even a video gaming system, all donated by local business that Kim solicited. This new children’s room is now a place that offers comfort and a smile to all that enter.

Kim began her scouting path as a Daisy back in Kindergarten while living in Granger, Indiana.  After moving to Basking Ridge, New Jersey, she targeted the higher levels of Girl Scouting and achieved her Bronze and Silver Awards.   Completing her Girl Scout Journey was accomplished after she and her family moved to Texas where she became a Juliette to complete her Gold Award.

This accomplishment places Kim in a very exclusive league. The Scouts website (www.girlscouts.org) states, “Last year, approximately 5,500 girls received the Girl Scout Gold Award. That was around 5.4% of the eligible registered Girl Scouts in grades 10-12.”

Congratulations Kim Dabal! You are an amazing young woman who has achieved the highest ranking within an amazing organization!  (Applause…applause…applause!!!)
