Wait, Wait! What’s the Rush?

by Joy Donovan on November 12, 2009

Sadly, I must revisit a topic I’ve written about before.

Let us gather together to ask that we remember Thanksgiving, a holiday certainly in danger of being crowded right off the calendar.

Yes, it’s true, I actually heard Christmas carols played not only in a store, but on TV, before Halloween. Tragic, I tell you, (I’m shaking my head slowly and sadly for emphasis) tragic. And decorations! Oh woe is me! On my very own street I have witnessed perfectly fine pumpkins and mums being pushed aside to make way for (bear with me now…I feel faint as I write this) twinkling lights and Santa decorations.

It’s wrong. Just wrong.

Halloween, all hallow’s eve, is what comes at the end of October. Christmas, Hannakuh, Kwanzaa–all those holidays are tucked into December. But, please, I ask of you, let’s let Thanksgiving hold its own place in November.

What, Virginia? Not believe in Thanksgiving? Why you might as well not believe in Virginias.

Remember the pilgrims? Remember the Indians? The idea of setting aside differences and coming together to celebrate difficult times is a notion worthy of preserving. Surely in this year of layoffs, recession, War, flu epidemic and normal headaches such as traffic, we need a little Thanksgiving. A time to give thanks–express appreciation–for the bounty in our lives.

We don’t want to skim through this special, American holiday. It deserves a place on the calendar all its own without crowding from Halloween candy or Christmas tinsel.  Don’t be a turkey…for that I would be thankful.

“Joy, just trust me on this, don’t go into NorthEast Mall until after
Thanksgiving. I was in there last night and it is totally decked out for
December. Of course, that is probably what got your dander up…..

Ok Joy, who got your dander up? I will wait until after we’ve celebrated Thanksgiving to start decorating for Christmas, but I will have all the decorating done before I return to work on Monday!!
