Leon is My Home Boy

by Joy Donovan on April 11, 2010

Aging hippies, soccer moms and the kindergarten set united Friday night for a little Leon Russell at Fort Worth’s Main Street Art Festival.

The Friday night headliner packed the streets with fans both young and old, but the ones with the most gray in their hair knew best the words. Uncle Leon–that’s what we call him in my home town of Tulsa where Leon lives–sported his customary cowboy hat atop his white hair. His beard, which is postively Rip Van Winkle style, doesn’t get in the way of his tackeling the keyboards.

He played some of his old stuff, like ”Delta Lady,” for the crowd thick with Baby Boomers, and some of new. It was all good. And did you know he had brain surgery in January? That’s what my old employer, The Tulsa World reported so I believe it.

Almost as exciting as dancing to Leon was stumbling upon the booth of artist Kathrine Allen-Coleman. Her “dress paintings” were fabulous, adorable and inspired. You can check it out here– http://dresspaintings.blogspot.com/ –but I promise you her Web site doesn’t do her work justice. You must see them for yourselves.

Between Leon Russell and fun art, Friday night was made for dancing.

Southlake Club Selects Featured Artist

by Joy Donovan on April 7, 2010

Lin Martinique-Whittaker has been named artist of the year for the 11thAnnual Art in the Square, the outdoor festival scheduled for April 23 to 25 in Southlake Town Square.

This year’s festival, with the theme “Carnevale in Venice,” will feature the works of 140 professional artists in this juried event. Also planned are a local youth juried exhibition, musical entertainment, wine tastings and children’s activities. Southlake Women’s Club (www.southlakewomensclub.org) annually hosts Art in the Square, as a fundraiser for the non-profit organization’s charitable activities.

The event’s honored artist always has been fascinated with the human figure and the use of shapes and symbols to convey an ornamental mood.  Martinique-Whittaker’s (www.martiniqueart.com) textured and multi-layered pieces create the fabric and details of the various costumes.  Growing up in Detroit, she was influenced by her father’s love of music and her mother’s design talent.

Admission to  Art in the Square is free. Hours of operation are 4 to 10:30 p.m. April 23, 10 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. April 24 and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. April 25. For more information check www.artinthesquare.com.
