What a Pleasure!

by Joy Donovan on September 26, 2010

Artist Trish Biddle donated a painting in honor of Realtor Roxann Taylor.

It was my pleasure to emcee, along with my partner in crime, Larre Green, Metroport Meals on Wheel’s Fall Fashion Show and Shopping Bazaar Friday at the Marriott Solana.

Besides the great cause of raising money to feed senior citizens, executive director Mary King and Karen Malone were so wonderful with whom to work. About 150 people attended Friday’s luncheon and were treated to a great day of fun–all while raising funds for MMOW’s programs.

The luncheon was very nice and the chicken delish, but can we talk about the clothes in the fashion show? Produced by Candy Miller and Debbie Felps, the show was packed with great-looking fall fashions. I spied about five handbags that I needed to adopt, and State Rep. Vicki Truitt modeled the cutest white blouse. There were some really cute frocks, too, and then there were furs! The nice people at David Hunt Furs even allowed Larre and me to wear a couple on stage.

Star of the day, though, was Realtor Roxann Taylor, the first-ever recipient of MMOW’s LINK Award for her support of community causes. Mary King presented her award, but there was another surprise. Celebrated artist Trish Biddle (www.trishbiddle.com), who you might remember as the Westlake woman who has been named the official artist of both the Kentucky Derby and The Westminster Dog Show, donated a huge original painting to Roxann.

Roxann told me it’s not going to her home, but her Southlake office. Anyone wanting to get a look can swing by to see this great piece of art.

‘Modern Family’ Not the Most Important Event

by Joy Donovan on September 22, 2010

Besides one of my favorite TV shows, “Modern Family,” (http://abc.go.com/shows/modern-family) returning to the tube, there’s something else even better happening tonight.

Fall.

Yes, after too many weeks of too many hot, hot and hotter days. Fall arrives at 10:09 (central time) p.m. today, and it’s not a minute too soon.

As you may remember from school, the date of the autumn equinox corresponds to sun’s crossing the equator moving southward. It is also based on the day  when night and day are nearly of the same length.

Hallelujah and amen, my brothers and sisters.

After I sat at a football game Saturday for my beloved Sooners (ou.edu), I was melting. As I momentarily allowed my mind to wander away from the game (actually I was delirious from the heat), I remembered my idea of football season–a time associated with sweaters, apples and cooler weather. But that was a fantasy, since we were using our programs to fan ourselves as we sat in shorts and flip-flops.

In some cultures, the arrival of fall is celebrated with certain rituals. Some groups light candles and affirm what they are grateful for and what they want released from their lives.

Well, I definitely can tell you. I am grateful for cooler temperatures, lower air conditioning bills and cute sweaters. I am happy to release 100-degree days, cars that burn you when you touch them and feeling miserable.

Happy Equinox to you one and all.

Two tin cans and string might work better!!

by Larre Green on September 21, 2010

I have to say I am frustrated.  Not necessarily because of work or pending matters but because for the most part of the day, when I have tried to use my cell phone, it seems to either take forever to place a call, go directly  to a voice mail without ringing or when it does ring, it then drops the call.  Now I know these new fangled communications products are supposed to help our lives but I think they help us run to the bar quicker!

Over the past few months there has been a television ad running for a soup company that has the person calling and the person receiving the call, talking from tin cans attached with string.  Now I am wondering, is that just for fun, or did these people try this with cell phones and give up?

Oh well, I am not about to give up my phone and I know calling the cell phone company will only make me more crazy….so I guess the only answer is…yes bartender, I’ll have another one!
