Joel Allison Wins Leadership Award

Joel Allison, president and CEO, Baylor Health Care System (BHCS), Dallas, has been named the recipient of the 9thAnnual Virginia Chandler Dykes Leadership Award, presented by Bank of Texas and Texas Woman’s University.

 The announcement was made at a private reception in the home of Julie and Jim Turner on Oct. 19.  Texas Woman’s University Chancellor and President Dr. Ann Stuart will present the award to Joel Allison at the Virginia Chandler Dykes luncheon event Feb. 17 at the Belo Mansion and Pavilion, 2101 Ross Ave., Dallas.

Ebby Halliday Acers is the honorary chair of this year’s luncheon.

 Established in 2002, the Virginia Chandler Dykes Leadership Award is given annually to Dallas leaders with a life-long commitment to improving the quality of life in the community and to furthering the importance of education.  The award recognizes the life work of Virginia Chandler Dykes as an outstanding health care provider.

Past award recipients are Kathleen Mason, 2010; Caroline Rose Hunt, 2009; T. Boone Pickens, 2008; Lindalyn Adams, 2007; Dr. and Mrs. Kern Wildenthal, 2006; Gretchen Minyard Williams and J.L. “Sonny” Williams, 2005; Geraldine “Tincy” Miller, 2004; and Susan and Charles Cooper, 2003. 

“I am truly humbled and honored to be the 9threcipient of the Virginia Chandler Dykes Leadership Award and accept this honor on behalf of Baylor Health Care System,” said Joel Allison.  “I feel so blessed to have such an outstanding relationship with Texas Woman’s University, which has provided Baylor and so many other institutions with wonderful health care professionals, helping us provide better care for our patients.”

With more than three decades in health care management, Allison joined BHCS in 1993 and served as senior executive vice president and COO before being promoted to president and CEO in 2000.  He is a Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives, and nationally he serves on the Healthcare Leadership Council and United Surgical Partners, International Board.  Allison serves on numerous state and local boards including Texas Association of Voluntary Hospitals, Healthcare Coalition of Texas, Dallas Citizens Council, Dallas Education Foundation, the Dallas Regional Chamber and the Center for Informed Faith.

 He was selected in 2004 as a Baylor University “Distinguished Alumnus” and received the Trinity University Healthcare Alumni Association “Leonard A. Duce Award” in 1999 for outstanding leadership and significant contribution to the healthcare field.  In addition, he was honored in 2005 by the Dallas Historical Society with the “Excellence in Healthcare” award and in 2008 by the Dallas-Fort Worth Hospital Council with the Boone Powell, Sr. Award for Excellence.  

Allison received a bachelor’s degree in journalism and religion at Baylor University in 1970 and attended Trinity University’s health care administration program, where he earned his master’s degree in 1973.  He is also a graduate of the Advanced Management Program at Harvard Business School, and in 2004 received an Honorary Doctor of Humanities degree from Dallas Baptist University.   

He and his wife Diane have a daughter, two sons, and six grandchildren.
