Katie Brandon Weds Chase Torres

by Joy Donovan on December 20, 2010

Miss Katharine Joy Brandon became the bride of Mr. Chase Knoll Torres in a candlelight ceremony Dec. 18th at First United Methodist Church of Fort Worth.

She is the daughter of Daniel G. and Joy Donovan Brandon of Colleyville. She is granddaughter of Joy Donovan York of Tulsa and the late Dr. John M. Donovan and Katherine Brandon of Norman and the late Dan Brandon. The groom is the son of Martha Knoll of Alexandria, LA.

Dr. Mike Marshall officiated at the candlelight ceremony. Soloist was the Rev. Julie Ann Allen who sang Panis Angelicus and The Lord’s Prayer.

Given in marriage by her family and escorted by her father, the bride wore an Alencon lace gown with a sweetheart neckline and a cathedral train. For the ceremony, she accented the gown with a fur stole and blusher veil. She carried a bouquet of red roses, hypericum berries, Christmas greens and lace from her maternal grandmother’s wedding gown.

Margaret Rose Brandon served as her sister’s maid of honor. Other bridesmaids were her sisters Julia Claire Brandon and Dr. Sarah Elizabeth Brandon, plus her cousin, Elizabeth Donovan Hood.  The bridesmaids, wearing floor-length green satin gowns, carried white faux fur muffs decorated with holly leaves and vintage brooches.

Members of the house party were Morgan Hudson Baker, Kyndra Heffington Carrales, Danielle Jones and Dr. Kendell Sowards. House party corsages consisted for vintage brooches adorned with holly leaves and berries.

Dr. James Knoll III, the groom’s uncle, acted as best man. Groomsmen were John Janecek, Dr. William Crenshaw and Patrick Donovan Hood. Ushers were John Bryant Donovan, Kevin Donovan Hood and First Lt. Lane R. Garman. Lane Robert Whiddon, the groom’s nephew, served as ring bearer.

The Ashton Hotel was the site of the reception where the band On the  Way entertained guests for dancing. The new couple’s first dance was to You Are the Sunshine of My Life. The bride danced with her father to All I Want for Christmas is You, and the groom danced with his mother to Me and My Bobbie McGee before leading the guests in a Louisiana-style “second line,” complete with white umbrellas.

The bride graduated from the University of Oklahoma where she was a member of Kappa Alpha Theta. She also received a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from University of Texas at Arlington and now works as a registered nurse for Texas Health Resources.

The groom received a bachelor’s degree from The University of Louisiana at Lafayette and a master’s degree from New Mexico State University. He is a doctoral candidate in clinical psychology.

After a honeymoon to Cancun, the couple will be at home in Bedford.

Yoo-hoo, Santa!

by Joy Donovan on December 13, 2010

I have three daughters. This works for me.

This was on wika-something, but it sounds like a fab idea. Should I call up the North Pole?

While there are no written records of the origin of the Christmas stocking, there are popular legends that attempt to tell the history of this Christmas tradition. One such legend has several variations, but the following is a good example: Very long ago, there lived a poor man and his three very beautiful daughters. He had no money to get his daughters married, and he was worried what would happen to them after his death.

Saint Nicholas was passing through when he heard the villagers talking about the girls. St. Nicholas wanted to help, but knew that the old man wouldn`t accept charity. He decided to help in secret. He waited until it was night and crept through the chimney.

He had three bags of gold coins with him, one for each girl. As he was looking for a place to keep those three bags, he noticed stockings of the three girls that were hung over the mantelpiece for drying. He put one bag in each stocking and off he went. When the girls and their father woke up the next morning, they found the bags of gold coins and were of course, overjoyed. The girls were able to get married and live happily ever after.[1]

And I really like that “happily ever after part.”

Fa La La for Presbyterian Night Shelter

by Joy Donovan on December 9, 2010

Oh what fun it is to…go to the Presbyterian Night Shelter’s Christmas Gala.

Last Friday the annual party was held again at Fort Worth’s Ridglea Country Club with everyone dressed in the Christmas sparkles. Air kisses, cosmos and a high school choir greeted party-goers at the entrance. The dinner buffet was followed by dancing to the sounds of The Raybans.

Macy Hill and Aubra Wilson co-chaired the fun event, which raises money for the Presbyterian Night Shelter (www.pns-tc.org)  to help the homeless. Clients number around 700, so the happy party will help make those clients’ days a little brighter, too.

Community Loses Two Very Special Individuals

by Larre Green on December 8, 2010

Recently, North East Tarrant County lost two wonderful individuals, Barbara Baker and Steve Ewing.  Although their laughter and kindness will forever be missed, because of their unending acts of kindness through volunteerism, their legacy will live on through the many lives they had touched.

During this holiday season, why not take the time to make a difference in someone else’s life and create your own legacy?
