Twisted Up Over Dancing

Maksim Chmerkovsiy will dance in Dallas in July. Will he or won't he take his shirt off?

There are not many shows I watch faithfully. “Modern Family” is one, and “The Today Show” is another, although Savannah Guthrie is on my last nerve.

There’s one more: “Dancing With the Stars.”

So now I’m all kinds of excited that those masters of twinkling toes and dazzling costumes are coming to north Texas! Yes, two shows of “Ballroom with a Twist” are planned July 19 at the Music Hall at Fair Park. At both 2 and 7:30 p.m., you can expect to see professional dancers Maksim Chmerkovskiy, Karina Smirnoff, Tony Dovolani and Cheryl Burke.

Tickets are on sale at The Box Office, 5959 Royal Lane, in Dallas; 1-800-982-2787 or ticketmaster.com.

Fox trot or waltz? Cha cha or jive?

‘Modern Family’ Not the Most Important Event

Besides one of my favorite TV shows, “Modern Family,” (http://abc.go.com/shows/modern-family) returning to the tube, there’s something else even better happening tonight.

Yes, after too many weeks of too many hot, hot and hotter days. Fall arrives at 10:09 (central time) p.m. today, and it’s not a minute too soon.

As you may remember from school, the date of the autumn equinox corresponds to sun’s crossing the equator moving southward. It is also based on the day  when night and day are nearly of the same length.

Hallelujah and amen, my brothers and sisters.

After I sat at a football game Saturday for my beloved Sooners (ou.edu), I was melting. As I momentarily allowed my mind to wander away from the game (actually I was delirious from the heat), I remembered my idea of football season–a time associated with sweaters, apples and cooler weather. But that was a fantasy, since we were using our programs to fan ourselves as we sat in shorts and flip-flops.

In some cultures, the arrival of fall is celebrated with certain rituals. Some groups light candles and affirm what they are grateful for and what they want released from their lives.

Well, I definitely can tell you. I am grateful for cooler temperatures, lower air conditioning bills and cute sweaters. I am happy to release 100-degree days, cars that burn you when you touch them and feeling miserable.

Happy Equinox to you one and all.
