Who Wants Money for Their Organizations in 2010?

The Southlake Woman’s Club is accepting grant applications but their deadline is this coming Friday, January, 15th, so procrastinators get cracking!

According to the Southlake Woman’s Club’s Art in the Square Website, the Southlake Women’s Club Foundation is “dedicated to helping community organizations that focus on enhancing the lives of children and families in Northeast Tarrant County.”

Last year this organization gave away over $100,000 and they have a whole pile of money to give away this year.

If your 501©3 organization could you a bit of cash, go to the Southlake Woman’s Club Art in the Square website, www.artinthesquare.com, click on the “Our Charities” tab on the left hand side of the page then click on “Grant Request Application.”  There you will find further information and where you can download the Grant Request Application form.

Remember, the deadline is this coming Friday, so go there right now!

A new club has opened in Southlake and this place is strictly “age” appropriate!

Ok, so get your mind out of the gutter!  This new club is for teens who are interested in learning about business, and considering the economic climate, the sooner they learn, the better!

Although originally founded by Suzi Thorne, the Young Entrepreneurs of Southlake actually owes its existence to her 13 year-old son Brock.

“He has been wanting to start his “own business” since he was 11 and we’ve finally decided that a “club” might be a good place for him to start.  This will be a great place for kids to meet others that have like minds.  I have found that there are so many things for athletes in this town, but business minded kids have nothing!  We are thinking “tweens” to 18 years of age!”  stated Ms. Thorne.

This club isn’t just a social club either, members will get to meet and hear industry leaders at monthly meetings, in addition to building their own network of young business powerhouse contacts.

“Our goal is to have guest speakers in each month, i.e. people who have started their own businesses with great success, speak with the children about coming up with ideas, setting goals, making business plans, being computer savvy, networking, etc.   We will occasionally take “field trips” and go behind the scenes at local businesses to see how things run.”  said Ms. Thorne.

Of course this club will also be about having fun as well.  I understand that along with the more structured activities, fun activities such as bowling, skating and pizza parties are being planned as well.

Thus far, the website, www.youngentrepreneursofsouthlake.org has been secured and is currently under construction. However, the date of the first meeting has already been set for Monday, September 21st from 6:00-7:30 pm.   Anyone who is interested in becoming a founding member of Young Entrepreneurs of Southlake is invited to attend the inaugural meeting. Attendees please call Ms. Thorne at 817-442-8224, or email her at suzithorneathome@aol.com,  to RSVP and receive directions.

You never know which of these young entrepreneurs might become the next Donald Trump!

There She Is…Almost

Times change. Death and taxes still only two things you can count on.

Miss America, once upon a time, always was crowned the weekend after Labor Day in Atlantic City. Years ago, it was a way to extend vacationing along the boardwalk. Bert Parks singing, high heels with one-piece swim suits–tradition! But in our new millennium, we crown Miss America in January in Vegas with the help of–what else?–reality TV. Throw 52 young women together, and we get to play pageant judge.

So our cute, smart, wonderful Miss Texas, Rebecca Robinson, will be showcased tonight on the first installment of the TV show, “Miss America, Countdown to the Crown,” at 9 p.m. on TLC. Evidently we get to vote on who we like.

I’ve had the pleasure of spending some time with our tap-dancing Miss T, and I can tell you she is a winner. Her TLC bio claims that she’s “bilingual,” but that misses her languages by two. Rebecca speaks FOUR! That blows that dumb-blonde stereotype all to pieces, doesn’t it?

Just as the Miss A TV show takes off, we’re on a roll for the local pageants. Heather Edwards Bruce, herself once a runner-up to Miss Texas, tells me the Miss Southlake and Miss Teen Southlake Pageant is set for 7 p.m. Saturday (Jan. 3) at Carroll Senior High School in Southlake. Admission is $15.
